Double brokering: what a carrier can check before booking

Double brokering is when the broker you booked with passes your load to another carrier or broker without telling you. It happens after a load is booked, so no federal record shows it in advance — and any page claiming to detect it in advance is describing something the public record does not contain. What the record does show beforehand is a short list of dated facts: how old the authority is, whether a financial-security filing is on record, whether a cancellation is pending, whether the listed phone appears on other authorities, whether the entity also holds carrier authority, and whether a revocation or suspension notice is on file.

What double brokering is

A broker arranges transportation between a shipper and a motor carrier. In a double-brokered load, the company that gave you the rate confirmation does not hand the freight to you as the contracted carrier — it re-brokers it, or accepts freight that was already re-brokered to it. The carrier who actually hauls often finds out only when the invoice goes unpaid, because the party holding the money is not the party they contracted with.

The federal registration record is a record of registration: who holds authority, what financial security is filed, and what enforcement action has been taken. It is not a record of conduct on a particular load. That distinction is the whole reason this page exists.

What you can check before you book

These are the facts carriers commonly check, each one a field in the public FMCSA record. Every broker page on this site shows all six together, with the date we last read each one.

What the record showsWhat it does not prove
How old the broker authority isNew authority is normal for legitimate new brokerages. Age alone says nothing about conduct.
Whether a BMC-84 surety bond or BMC-85 trust filing is on recordA filing on record is not a payment guarantee, not a live balance, and does not show the remaining amount.
Whether a financial-security cancellation is on file, and its effective dateFilings are frequently replaced before the effective date. A pending cancellation is not a failure.
Whether the listed phone number appears on other FMCSA authoritiesShared numbers are common for filing services, agencies and multi-entity groups. This is not evidence of a shell network.
Whether the entity holds authority as both broker and motor carrierHolding both is legal and common. It does not mean freight is re-brokered.
Whether a revocation or an operating authority suspension notice is on fileAuthority may have been reinstated. A past action does not describe current conduct.

The manual routine, and what it costs you

Every one of those facts is public and free. The reason carriers skip them at 6am with a load waiting is that they live in different places:

The manual routineWhat it takes
Look up the MC on FMCSA SAFERopen the site, type the MC, read the authority status
Open the licensing and insurance system for the bond filingseparate system, separate search
Work out how old the authority isread a date, do the maths
Check whether the phone is shared with other authoritiesnot possible by hand

Same public records. We put them on one page and tell you when we last read them.

What none of this proves

  • It does not say a broker is double brokering. Nothing in the federal registration record shows conduct on a load.
  • Every signal has innocent explanations. New authority means a new business. A shared phone number usually means a filing service.
  • Absence of signals is not safety. A broker with a clean federal record can still fail to pay, or re-broker your load.
  • Records lag. Federal filings are published on the government’s schedule, not in real time. Check the date shown next to each fact.
  • We do not verify anything ourselves. We reproduce public records and say where each one came from.
  • This is not a consumer report. Do not use it for employment, credit, insurance or tenant decisions.

What the paperwork can tell you

Some checks only exist once you have a document in hand: whether the phone on the rate confirmation matches the number on the FMCSA record, when the email domain was registered, whether the payment terms run past the usual 30 days, and whether the company name on the document matches the name on the MC. Those are document checks, not record checks, and they sit in the rate confirmation scanner rather than on the broker page.

If it already happened, where to report it

CheckMyBroker does not determine liability, recommend a remedy, or promise that a financial-security claim will be paid. These are the official channels:

  • FMCSA National Consumer Complaint Database — the federal channel for complaints against a broker, carrier or freight forwarder: nccdb.fmcsa.dot.gov.
  • U.S. DOT Office of Inspector General hotline — for suspected fraud involving DOT programs and registrations: oig.dot.gov/hotline.
  • TIA Watchdog — the Transportation Intermediaries Association’s industry reporting programme, available to its members: tianet.org/watchdog.

You can also report how a broker paid you here. Carrier reports are unverified individual accounts, shown separately from the federal record and never mixed into the score.

After you book

Authority and financial security change without notice, and most of the change happens after the handshake. You can follow record changes across the whole directory, or monitor a single broker from its page and be told when its authority status or financial-security filing changes.

Common questions

Can you tell in advance whether a broker double brokers?

No. Double brokering is conduct that happens after a load is booked, and the federal registration record does not contain it. What you can read in advance is a set of dated facts about authority, financial security, contacts and enforcement history.

What is the clearest pre-booking signal?

There is no single one. Carriers commonly look at authority age, whether a financial-security filing is on record, whether a cancellation is pending, whether the listed phone appears on other authorities, whether the entity holds both broker and carrier authority, and whether a revocation or suspension notice is on file.

Where do I report a double-brokered load?

The FMCSA National Consumer Complaint Database is the federal channel. Suspected fraud involving DOT registrations can also go to the U.S. DOT Office of Inspector General hotline, and TIA members can use TIA Watchdog.
